Singletrack, wide trails and funparks
Manmade trails come in many shapes and sizes, from narrow ASDUG singletrack on good ground and sideslopes, to much wider trails heavily engineered and built from imported material. The trail style is dependant on the ground and who the trail is aimed at. Narrow footprint, minimum impact trails are fun to build and fun to ride, but are not always possible on poor ground and may not be suitable for a wider range of less skilled riders.
Bigger can be better
So, sometimes we have to go wider, but that doesn’t mean boring. Funparks for instance benefit from being a bit wider and it opens up access for 4-wheel physically impaired bikes. Heavily used trails also do have to be built with maintenance in mind and I like to design-in a way of allowing machinery access later.
